Co-operation between NASAC and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina
Since September 2011 NASAC and Leopoldina are cooperating in a three-year project funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). The goals of cooperation are to strengthen the network of African academies, invigorate the dialogue between science and policy in Africa, and strengthening contacts between African and German scientists working in policy-relevant scientific research.
In the course of the project, four Science-Policy Conferences on issues of Water Management, Health and Nutrition, Climate Change Adaption, and Biodiversity will help to link scientists and policymakers from Africa and Germany who will subsequently draft science-based reports for policy-advice. Moreover, NASAC and the Leopoldina will cooperate on trainings for academy members and staff. Furhtermore, a “Capacity Building Programme” will help to build a stronger, more independent network of African science academies.
The Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, founded in 1652, was elevated to the status of German National Academy of Sciences in 2008. It addresses key issues for the future of society from a scientific perspective and independently of economic or political interests, shares its findings with policy-makers and the public and puts these issues up for discussion on a national and international level
